My reason against
It could have been made up, it might have felt like it but it wasn't (Thats what some guy on the footplate said) but it was not even equipped with a speedometer and dynomometer cars weren't (I think) invented at this time. So i could be wrong, but its sort of 50/50

The GWR Covered up the event for 20 years not to scare the public, or took 20 years to make it up?

Surely people would NOTICE if a 100mph locomotive came tearing down the track. There would be damage and whatnot. It doesn't seem rational to me.

I mean...there would have to be VAST amounts of fuel to burn...and a lot of track to burn, too (as demonstrated in 'Back To The Future).
